Supporting Hormonal Health from the Start Understanding the HPO Axis

The HPO axis—short for Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian axis—is a vital communication system in the body that regulates the female reproductive cycle and plays a major role in mood, energy, fertility, and hormonal balance. This system begins its work during puberty and continues to influence health right through to menopause.

When the HPO axis becomes disrupted, it can lead to:

  • Irregular periods

  • Painful cycles

  • Mood swings

  • Anxiety

  • Fertility challenges

  • Hormonal imbalances

That’s why it's so important to nurture this system early, especially during the critical transition of puberty. Lifestyle support during these formative years lays the foundation for long-term hormonal health.

A note on early hormone use:

  • Where possible, it’s recommended to avoid synthetic hormones (like the contraceptive pill) during the first few years of menstruation. The pill can suppress the natural hormonal rhythm and place the body into a form of chemical menopause, interrupting the establishment of a healthy cycle. Supporting the body naturally in those early years gives the HPO axis space to regulate on its own, which may lead to better fertility and hormonal resilience later in life.

  • When we support the HPO axis, we’re not just supporting periods—we’re supporting brain health, mood, energy, and future fertility. Our role is to educate, empower, and provide holistic care that honours each stage of a woman’s hormonal journey.
