Dr Jacqui Sherriff, Osteopath

Your skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves and circulation work simultaneously together, which I find fascinating. Osteopathy is a very 'hands on' approach, which gently and safely treats a very broad range of conditions. It also seeks to identify the cause of the problem, so that the appropriate lifestyle adjustments can be made

As a very physically active person, Jacqui Sherriff has considerable personal experience with sporting injuries. “From early on, it was important to me to seek out safe, gentle and effective ways to deal with injury”, Jacqui said. “Osteopathy recognises the vital connection between the structure and function of the body and it adopts a ‘hands on’ approach towards healthcare, which was very appealing to me”, she said. “It focuses on how your skeleton, joints, muscles, connective tissue, nerves, circulation and organs function as a holistic unit, and it can be used to treat a very broad range of complaints”.

In Australia, Osteopaths are University trained in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and Osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners and are trained to recognise conditions which require medical referral. They are also trained to perform standard medical examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems.

Jacqui completed her training in Osteopathy at RMIT University in Bundoora. She holds a
Bachelor of Applied Science (Complementary Medicine) Osteopathy, a  Masters of Osteopathy and an Advanced Diploma in Western Herbal Medicine. Jacqui initially started out in practice in Launceston, Tasmania, in a large Osteopathic practice where she spent three years. "The clinic in Launceston proved to be a wonderful starting point for me in this profession, because I saw so many different musculoskeletal conditions", said Jacqui.  From there, Jacqui moved to the Mornington Peninsula where she worked in her own clinic for two years. "It was during this time that I treated many pregnant women with a very broad range of pregnancy related conditions, and I found it was something that I particularly enjoyed", she said.

"The wonderful thing about using osteopathy to assist women during pregnancy and also post partum, is that many of the discomforts of pregnancy we are resigned to 'put up with' can be alleviated gently and safely. The added bonus is that when mum is comfortable, it creates a more peaceful environment for the baby, and generally makes pregnancy a more enjoyable experience. And once the baby is born, it is wonderful to be able to help mums make that transition, and really care for their bodies. This also allows me to interact with their Obstetricians or other health providers to make the entire experience as safe and supportive as possible."

“Initially, I was impressed by the number of conditions that can be so effectively treated by Osteopathy”, Jacqui said. “We also seek to identify the cause of the problem, so that the appropriate lifestyle adjustments can be made. It is very empowering for patients to understand what is causing their pain or health issues”.

Included in the range of conditions that may benefit from Osteopathic treatment are:
  • Headaches and migraine
  • Back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Muscle Pain/ Fibromyalgia
  • Pregnancy related issues
  • Sporting Injuries
  • Issues related to inflammation in the body

“The range of symptoms that are created by some of these conditions is quite staggering, really”, said Jacqui. “And often, people don’t understand how connected some symptoms are to others, even if it doesn’t seem that they could be related”.

An Osteopathic consultation involves an examination and clinical tests, including diagnostic, orthopaedic or neurological tests, postural assessments and activities or exercises, which will help determine how best to manage your condition. “During my years of practice, I have learned the benefits of core stability to your structure, and I use Pilates based exercises as part of my Osteopathic management strategy. I also have a special interest in caring for mums during and after pregnancy. It is reassuring to many women to know that I can help prevent or manage a wide range of pre-and post-natal conditions, usually in conjunction with their other health care practitioners. Osteopathy is also an excellent option to treat a range of conditions in children of all ages, due to its gentle and non-invasive nature."

You can book appointments directly, no referral is necessary. Bring along any X-rays, scans or test results that you may have. Your initial consultation may last up to one hour. This will enable your osteopath to take a thorough history, examine and depending upon your condition, treat you.
